Tapping Party At Broadripple Brewpub

The tapping party at the Broadripple Brewpub for Susie's Sweet Stout brought out a record number of people the BRBP had ever had for the tapping of the Best of Show!  As best as we could count, 48 people came from as far away as Wisconsin to help Larry & Susie celebrate the tapping of Susie's Sweet Stout.  6 HCHBC members attended.  The stout brewed by Larry & Kevin turned out fantastic, especially when served from the beer engine at the brewpub.

Larry's Big Brew at the Broadripple Brewpub

I really didn't know what to expect when I was told the Broadripple Brewpub would brew up a batch of my award winning Susie's Sweet Stout.  Thinking I was probably going to just be there as part of the glory of getting Best of Show, I was just going bask in the moment.  Boy, was I wrong!  When they said I'd be brewing my beer, they meant I'D BE BREWING MY BEER!.  From the loading of the 482.5 lbs. of grain into the mash tun to cleaning out the tun when we were done.   All in all, a very enjoyable experience.  Thanks to Kevin for giving me a taste of what it's like to be a real brewer.

Half Moon Big Brew II 2009

This year's Half Moon Big Brew on May 2nd was an experiment in hops.  After everyone collected their wort from Jon's mash tun, we all brewed up our own beer using only 1 type of hop.  Trying to hit the same IBU's.  We were looking to see what flavors and aromas each type of hop lends to the beer.

Larry used Sterling
Tom used Amarillo
Andrew used Palasade
Dan used Mellinium
Brent used Perle
Mike & Jason used EKG
Jon S. used Willamette

The one week delay gave us a beautiful day to gather together and brew up no less than 10 batches of beer.

A wide assortment of homebrew equipment was on display.  Kettles of all shapes & sizes and chillers of all types.

A big thanks to Chris & Jon of the Half Moon who were on hand to offer support & advice on brewing.  They also set up a nice little treat of a jockey box with IPA & hefeweizen for the thirsty brewers.

Jon gave us a private tour of the workings of a professional brewery operation as he mashed up a couple hundred pounds of grain for a pale ale wort for us to do with what we would.

And we did, everyone had different hops and/or yeasts to create what should be a very interesting June meeting as we will get to share & compare the fruits of the first Half Moon Big Brew.
